Whether you’re looking for a short forest walk, a breathtaking waterfall, or a coastal path with incredible views, there are plenty of free and accessible options for all explorers.
In this guide, we share some of our favorite nature and culture walks in the Bay of Islands, starting right here in Paihia. These walks offer a chance to slow down, connect with the land, and explore the rich heritage and beauty that make this region so special.
From the serene mangroves leading to Haruru Falls, to the historic grounds of Waitangi, and the coastal walkway linking Opua to Paihia, there’s something here for families, solo travellers, and nature lovers alike.

Haruru Falls Walk
The Haruru Falls Walk is a peaceful and scenic trail that begins near the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and winds its way through lush native bush and mangroves. The highlight of the walk is the unique horseshoe-shaped waterfall — one of the few of its kind in New Zealand. This flat, family-friendly walk is perfect for a slow-paced afternoon, and the rich birdlife along the way adds to the immersive experience in nature. The trail is well maintained and accessible, making it ideal for walkers of all ages and fitness levels.
Waitangi Treaty Grounds Walk
The Waitangi Treaty Grounds are one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most culturally important locations. While access to the museum and cultural performances requires a ticket, the surrounding coastal paths and gardens are accessible to all. These grounds offer stunning views of the Bay and a deep sense of historical significance. It’s the perfect place for a slow walk with opportunities to reflect, observe native flora, and take in the beauty of a place where the nation’s founding document was signed.
Opua to Paihia Coastal Walk
This scenic 5-kilometre coastal trail connects the Paihia village with the charming town of Opua. The walk follows the edge of the bay, offering incredible views, boardwalks through mangroves, and plenty of shady spots under native bush. You’ll pass marinas, wooden bridges, and peaceful picnic areas. It’s an easy-to-moderate walk suitable for almost anyone and makes for a perfect morning or afternoon adventure. Bring your camera — there are plenty of picture-perfect moments along the way.
Rainbow Falls – Kerikeri
Just outside of Kerikeri, Rainbow Falls is a 27-metre-high cascade surrounded by thick bush and walking tracks. You can admire the waterfall from multiple viewing platforms, or follow the track down to the base for a closer look and a chance to feel the mist. The walk is short and easy from the carpark, but you can also continue along the trail toward the historic Stone Store area. It’s a great spot for families and a popular stop for anyone visiting the Far North.
Whangārei Falls
Often referred to as the most photogenic waterfall in New Zealand, Whangārei Falls is a 26-metre drop surrounded by a beautiful park. There’s a well-maintained loop trail that takes you to the base of the falls, across footbridges, and back to the top viewing platforms. It’s an easy 20–30 minute walk, perfect for all ages, and offers picnic spots, lush greenery, and interpretive signs that teach you about the local environment. A must-see stop if you’re driving through Northland.
